Lime
FOR THE PRAGMATISTS
By its very nature, lime is a sensual, ever-changing material that will take you on a journey through time and space.
- Lime is the result of firing limestone.
- Lime is a healthy material with many virtues, such as permeability to water vapour, sound and heat insulation and respect for the environment.
- Lime can be used in both the construction and finishing phases.
- Lime has a versatile aesthetic that can be adapted to suit any interior and any room in the house..
Lime and its derivatives fascinate me. For me, it's one of the materials that takes you on a journey. The backdrop for a warm, enveloping cocoon. A healthy, breathable, raw and sensual material. Its rough feel, its changing appearance that catches the light differently at every hour of the day or night.
1. Lime... in a nutshell
Lime is one of the oldest and most vital materials ever used by man. It has been around for over 6,000 years. Our ancestors used it to build and erect walls; the Egyptians used it, with or without plaster, to build the pyramids. The Mesopotamian, Phoenician, Inca and Mayan civilizations also used lime for building.
Abandoned for years in favour of concrete and chemical paints with high VOC1 values, lime has made a comeback in recent years, and that's just as well!
2. Lime... And its virtues
Lime is an alternative wall covering. It can replace plaster for ceilings, cement for mortars and vinyl or latex paints. It has numerous benefits for the environment, the well-being of residents and the home.
3. Lime .... Aesthetics and properties
Colours combined in gradations, brushed, waxed or iron effects, golden patinas... lime transforms your walls into poetic works of art. It's an invitation to travel.
For an industrial look, opt for grey renderings. They give your wall a waxed concrete effect for a designer feel.
For a Mediterranean feel, opt for warm colours reminiscent of the earth, such as ochre, yellow or reddish brown. The sun and warmth will come into your home, for an authentic effect.
For natural, ecological limewash walls, opt for natural tones such as cream or white. These tones are reminiscent of the traditional stone interiors of yesteryear.
Whitewash and lime paints
Ready-to-use natural lime paints exist but you can also create your own lime whitewash by mixing air lime, natural pigments and water. Different techniques for different finishes!
Stucco
Stucco is a fine plaster made from lime and marble powder. Smooth and very pleasant to the touch, they have a deep, mineral finish. Available in natural colours or bright, arty shades, stucco offers a host of creative possibilities.
Iron lime stucco, because it is smoothed and protected, is ideal for a bathroom. Water splashes have no effect on stucco. On the other hand, shower run-off is a contraindication. This is why tadelakt is preferred for showers or bathtub walls that drip. Be careful to distinguish between "water run-off" and "water splashes".
Tadelakt
Tadelakt is a thicker (5 to 7 mm), waterproof lime stucco that is traditionally used in North African bathrooms. Tadelakt is above all a matter of emotion. The application of tadelakt is highly technical and must be carried out by experienced craftsmen.
